Issue #8: Resiliency Week

Serverless Superhero

This week our serverless superhero is Kristi Perreault, Principal Software Engineer at Liberty Mutual on the serverless DevOps team. Kristi is the organizer of the brand new Serverless Denver meetup group who has their first meeting tomorrow, May 24th at 7pm MDT. Keep an eye out for Kristi as she makes her way through all of our favorite podcasts, events, and conferences. Thank you for all or your contributions to the community, Kristi!

Tutorials

If you’ve been thinking about building a global app or following a regional failover pattern for disaster recovery, Bruno Schaatsbergen has you covered. He tells us about how to use global KMS keys and secrets for easier management, rotation, and security. Good news for Terraform users - the post builds out a template for you to use, so when you’re done reading you can deploy right away.

Before you get too deep into EventBridge, make sure you read Sheen Brisals review on his experience thus far. It’s a great read and offers invaluable insights on what he expected vs what reality is.

As we all know, performance often times directly correlates to cost with serverless apps. Enrico Portolan helps us out by giving us 5 ways to speed up your Lambda functions. He tells us about different ways to optimize and why each way is beneficial.

Database

Manusha Chethiyawardhana gives us a detailed comparison between DynamoDB and Cassandra. He talks about various facets of each database and provides use cases for when to use one over the other.

Keeping on the global deployment or disaster recovery train, Soumil Shah walks us through how to create DynamoDB global tables in his video. If you’re looking to create a new global app, be sure to start here.

Spotlight

If you aren’t building your serverless apps using some form of Infrastructure as Code (IaC), it’s about time to start. Jones Zachariah Noel walks us through reasons why and several options you have to get started. It’s a great primer for IaC as a concept.

Last Words

Building production ready apps requires an intentional approach to several areas of software development. Can your app self-heal when transient errors occur? How maintainable is your codebase to fix bugs when they come up? How robust is your CI pipeline?

The content posted this week from the community helps us realize the answers to a few of these questions. If you don’t have a great answer, take these articles as a reference and make a change.

Thank you to everyone who writes content week after week, those who contribute to open source projects, and those who send out newsletters. The the rate of innovation in the cloud, it can be hard to keep up. But with community members like you, it is much easier.

If you’d like to make a recommendation for the serverless superhero or for an article you found especially useful, send me a message on Twitter, LinkedIn, or email.

Happy Coding!

Allen
